NORTH CANTON, Ohio - With the end of the 2019 outdoor track and field season looming, the Walsh Cavaliers track and field team competed at three different meets to try and improve their qualifying standards for the 2019 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.
The team competed at the Harrison Dillard Twlight Meet at Baldwin Wallace, the Last Chance Meet at Hillsdale and the Final Qualifer at Mount Olive this past weekend.
Lane Knoch competed on Thursday at Hillsdale and ended the weekend at Mount Olive. At Hillsdale, Knoch ran a 14.50 in the 110 meter hurdles, reaching a provo mark while finishing first. He placed second in the 400 meter hurdles with a provo time of 53.43 seconds. Knoch bested both of his times at Mount Olive on Sunday. In the 110 meter hurdles, Knoch finished sixth with a 14.43 second time. He broke his own school record in the 400 meter hurdles with a provo time of 52.14 seconds, finishing sixth.
Malia Turley and Morissa Mallory each performed double-duty at Baldwin Wallace and Hillsdale this weekend. Turley finished fourth at Hillsdale in the hammer throw, throwing a NCAA D2 Provo mark of 53.34 meters. She finished fourth at BW, throwing 51.93 meters but still meeting the provisional standards. Mallory was fifth in the shot put at both events. At Hillsdale, she hit the provo mark with a throw of 13.68 meters. At Baldwin Wallace, Mallory just missed a provo mark with a throw of 13.44 meters.
Nine other athletes finished top eight in the Harrison Dillard Twlight Meet. Payton Breehl (36.08 meters) and Dante Penza (46.83 meters) each finished eighth in the women's and men's discus throw, respectively. Walsh had three men finish in the top eight in the men's 5000 meter run. Noah Murray (14:48.22) finished second while Jared Bugaj (14:57.22) was fourth and Beau Boyden (15:21.45) finished eighth in the event. Alexa Leppelmeier won the women's 3000 meter steeplechase with a NCAA D2 Provo mark of 10:55.21. Bre Bakan (2:13.51) was third in the women's 800 meter run with Josh Conrad (1:53.35) finishing third on the men's side. Alexandra Rodgers finished third in the javelin throw for the women, throwing 34.92 meters.
The qualifiers for the NCAA D2 National Championships should be released sometime on Tuesday (May 14).
