(ROLLA, Mo.) – Four Cavaliers have been named to the D2CCA Baseball All-Midwest Region Team as voted on by the region's sports information directors. Austin Szink and Matt Iosue were both named as First Team selections, while Andrew Stalnaker and Ryan McSweeney earned Second Team honors.
All 16 first-team All-Region selections will now be placed on the national ballot for All-America Consideration. The All-America teams are scheduled to be released on Friday, May 26.
Szink was named to the First Team as a catcher as a threat at the plate both on offense and defense. His .648 slugging percentage is fifth in the GLIAC and his 13 home runs are fourth. He also has 53 runs scored for seventh in the GLIAC, and is seventh in RBIs with 45 and total bases with 116. Szink sports a perfect fielding percentage and has caught 12 runners stealing, second-best in the conference.
Iosue was named to the First Team as a starting pitcher. The Cavs' ace went 7-3 on the year for the third-most wins in the GLIAC. His 2.16 in GLIAC games and two shutouts led the league, while he tossed 10.37 strikeouts per nine innings in conference contests. The southpaw ended the season with a 2.90 ERA overall, third-best in the conference.
Stalnaker was named to the Second Team at first base. The tall infielder was fourth in the GLIAC with 71 hits and was also in the top 10 in RBIs at 44. His .372 batting average was sixth in the GLIAC. Defensively he was first with 356 put-outs and fifth with 28 double plays.
McSweeney was named to the Second Team as a relief pitcher. When Iosue and other starters left the game, McSweeney was called upon as the team's closer and delivered with nine saves, second-most in the GLIAC. He had a 0.91 ERA in 29.2 innings pitched over 17 appearances. Despite being a reliever, McSweeney still racked up 31 strikeouts for a 9.4 average per nine innings. He was the deciding pitcher five times this season with a 4-1 record.
