(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – A three-run eighth inning helped propel Walsh over No. 24 Ohio Dominican 7-5 in a much-needed G-MAC win Friday. It's the second nationally ranked team the Cavaliers (21-16, 14-8) have beat this season along with then-ranked No. 7 Minnesota State Mankato.
The late game rally was sparked by four consecutive singles to start the frame. Eric Conner brought in the first run on the third of those singles to score Cobe Hutchison who led off the inning. That tied the game at 5-5 before Andrew Czech followed to bring in Marcus Bobb to take the lead. Alec Debruler provided the insurance run three batters later on sacrifice fly that brought in Conner.
Walsh initially took a 4-0 lead early in the game with three runs in the second and another in the third. Spencer Helwig provided the production in the second as he went deep to left field for his first home run of the season. An Avery Janning double down the third base line scored Bobb in the third.
The Panthers (28-11, 14-6) eventually got their bats going with three runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh. However the Cavalier bullpen was able to shut them down the rest of the way.
Justin Hovorka came on in relief in the seventh and pitched for four outs to get the win. He struck out one of those outs and allowed two hits as he improved to 4-2 on the year. Caleb Canter entered in the ninth and faced five batters for his second save.
Both teams will gather again tomorrow for a twin bill with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
