High-Powered Kent State Too Much For Cavaliers

(KENT, Ohio) – In its final non-conference game of the regular season, Walsh fell to Division I power Kent State by a score of 12-3 at Schoonover Stadium on Wednesday evening. The Cavaliers (22-20) did show some spark early on, but the Golden Flashes (29-13) answered any shot given by the Maroon and Gold.

That spark came in the form of an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Marcus Bobb and Eric Conner led off the game on base after both being hit by pitches, and both ended up being the aforementioned runs. After a wild pitch placed them in scoring position, Bobb was able to score on a sac fly by Avery Janning before Brenden Spaulding belted a single to left to score Conner.

Unfortunately for the Cavs that was the last time the offense would threaten for the rest of the game as they were limited to two hits the rest of the way. Andrew Czech singled down the right field line and Alec Debruler provided the final Walsh run with a home run to left in the seventh.

In the meantime Kent States scored in all but two innings with a decisive blow coming in the fourth with a six-spot.

Justin Hovorka took the loss to fall to 4-4 on the season after he started the game and went the first two innings.

Walsh now turns its attention to Hillsdale for an all-important series to end the regular season. Both teams are fighting for playoff spots in next week's G-MAC Tournament. The Cavaliers are currently clinging to the final spot with a conference mark of 14-10 just a game ahead of Lake Erie who battles Malone in its final series.

The Chargers are currently in second place in the North Division tied with Malone and two games up on the Cavs. The top three teams from each division receive automatic bids to the tournament with the final two wild card spots going to the teams with the best conference record regardless of division, although both spots will go to teams in the North.

The Cavs and Chargers will start to settle things out on Saturday as they gather for a doubleheader. First pitch from Biery Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
