Football Picked Fifth In First Great Midwest Preseason Poll

(INDIANAPOLIS) – The 2017 Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Football Preseason Coaches Poll presented by Under Armour has been released and Walsh is selected to finish fifth in its first full season. The Cavaliers received 33 points from the coaches in the eight-team sport.

Ohio Dominican was selected to win the conference with 53 points and four first-place votes. Hillsdale edged Findlay for the second spot with 49 points and one first place-vote. The Oilers received 48 points with two first-place votes. Alderson Broaddus picked up the final first-place tally and received 38 points.

The Cavaliers were picked ahead of Lake Erie which received 24 points. Kentucky Wesleyan was selected seventh with 23, and Malone rounded out the group in eighth with 21 points.

This is the sport's second year of existence in the conference after Alderson Broaddus (7-2 in 2016) hoisted the inaugural championship trophy in 2016 with victories against Kentucky Wesleyan (3-8 in 2016) and Malone (2-8 in 2016).
 
The Great Midwest is competing for postseason bids to the national championship in NCAA Super Region I along with the Mountain East Conference, Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and Northeast 10.
 
The official start of the season gets under on Thursday, Aug. 31, with three teams taking the field for the first time in 2017. Walsh will open the season that Saturday, Sept. 2, as it hosts former conference rival Wayne State at Tom Benson Stadium at 1 p.m. GreatMidwestSports.com will publish a comprehensive season preview on Friday, Aug. 18, with thoughts from the Great Midwest head coaches.
