Six Scorers in Double Figures Lead Walsh, 99-65

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team concluded non-conference play with a 99-65 victory over the Wilberforce University Bulldogs on Tuesday (Jan. 15) night at Alumni Arena.

A balanced scoring attack where six players reached double figures was the key to victory for the Cavaliers.

The Bulldogs led 3-2 early after a three pointer. The Cavaliers answered with a 14-2 run over the next three minutes. JT Shumate scored seven points and Sterling Christy added five points as the Cavaliers led 16-5 at the under 16 media timeout. Wilberforce closed the lead to 19-14 with a 9-3 run in the next two minutes. A Mark Mokros three pointer capped an 18-4 rally by Walsh where they expanded the lead to 19, 37-18 with 8:02 left. Darryl Straughter made two threes and Shumate added four points on the run. Four straight points for the Bulldogs were answered with a Cavalier 7-0 push. A steal from Conner Wess led to a Mokros layup as Walsh led 46-24 with 2:58 to go before the half. The Bulldogs trimmed the lead to 18 before Mokros took over the final ninety seconds of the half. He scored five of the final six points of the half as Walsh led 54-30 at the break.

Three different players had reached double-digits in the first half as the Cavaliers shot 58.8% (20-34) from the floor.

The balanced scoring continued out of the locker room in the second half as the lead grew to 32 over the first five minutes. Christy, Shumate and Wess all made multiple buckets while Caleb Canter and Straughter added one each as Walsh led 71-39 with 14:28 remaining. Three minutes later, the Bulldogs cut the lead to 27 before Walsh went on a 14-3 run with four three pointers, all by a different player. Walsh's lead grew to 38, the largest of the night with 6:55 to go. The teams exchanged baskets throughout the final six minutes, leading to the final score of 99-65.

Shumate led the Cavaliers with 19 points and nine rebounds. Christy went for 18 points and seven rebounds in the game. Mokros added 15 points and three assists. Wess had three pointers in route to 11 points with five rebounds and four assists. Straughter hauled in eight boards to go with his 11 points and five assists. Canter had ten points and eight rebounds with five assists as well.

The team shot 53.6% (37-69) from the floor and grabbed 48 rebounds, including 18 offensively.

Tony Collins led Wilberforce with 12 points.

The Cavaliers will return to G-MAC play on Saturday (Jan. 19) when they travel to Painesville, Ohio for a matchup with the Lake Erie Storm.
