Preview: Men's Basketball Bound for West Virginia

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team will conclude the current four-game road swing with two games in West Virginia tomorrow (Feb. 7) and Saturday (Feb. 9).  

Walsh will take on the Davis & Elkins Senators on Thursday at 5:30 PM and then will close the weekend against the Alderson Broaddus Battlers on Saturday at 4:00 PM.  

GAMEDAY INFO 

Walsh has had short series histories with Davis & Elkins and Alderson Broaddus. Walsh have won four straight games against Davis & Elkins, as Walsh won 92-56 on Jan. 26. Five different players scored double figures for the Cavaliers in the first matchup this year. The Cavaliers are 4-2 against the Battlers, including an 81-65 win on Jan. 24. Darryl Straughter led the Cavaliers with 22 points in the win at home.  

WALSH NOTES  

  • Walsh has their second four-game winning streak of the year after an 80-64 win at Ohio Dominican on Saturday (Feb. 2). The Cavaliers are 15-7 overall and 10-4 in the G-MAC.  

  • Sterling Christy went off for a career-high 29 points with 11 shots made and six free throws (both also career-highs). He also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. This season, Christy averages 13.6 points per game and 9.7 rebounds a game.  

  • JT Shumate had his ninth 20+ point game of his young career as he finished with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting. The freshman averages 18.1 points a game, the second-most in the conference. He also pulls 6.2 rebounds a game, second on the team.  

  • Conner Wess also had a career-day with 16 points and four three pointers. He averages 7.3 points per game and has scored double-digits in three straight games. In the last three games, he is scoring 12.0 points per game and shooting 68% from the floor and 62% from deep. 

  • The team shot 54.9% from the floor, shooting above 50% for the third straight game. Overall for the year, the Cavaliers are 8-0 when they shoot over 50% in a game.  

  • The defense for Walsh has been stellar as they have allowed 66.3 points per game. They have held teams under 66 points 12 times this season.  

  • Walsh leads the G-MAC in the following categories as a team: total rebounds, three pointers made, three pointers attempted and defensive rebounds.  

  • With six games left in the regular season, Walsh is 3-3 against the teams remaining. The opponents have an overall record of 48-67 and a G-MAC mark of 29-45. Right now, Walsh is the #3 seed in the G-MAC Tournament and would host Ohio Dominican in the quarterfinals.  

DAVIS & ELKINS NOTES 

  • The Senators are 5-14 overall and 2-10 in the G-MAC. Davis & Elkins fell 78-57 to Alderson Broaddus on Saturday, bringing the current losing streak to two games. Trevor English had a double-double against the Battlers, with 23 points and 14 rebounds.  

  • English leads the team with 15.8 points and 8.3 rebounds a game.  

  • Edmund Parker is second on the team with 11.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest.  

ALDERSON BROADDUS NOTES 

  • As noted before, Alderson Broaddus last played against the Senators, winning the game 78-57. The Battlers are 10-10 overall and 6-6 in the conference, currently holding the eighth seed in the G-MAC tournament. AB has won two straight games before hosting Malone on Thursday.  

  • The Battlers have four different double-double scorers that can lead the team in any game. Mike Davis leads with 16.3 points, while Tyler Golphin is second with 11.4 PPG. David Shriver and Coye Campbell average just over 10 points a game.  

  • Malik Bocook (9.7 RPG) and Brandon Simmons (9.5 RPG) are the two leading rebounders for the Battlers.
