(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh dropped its home opener by a score of 14-8 to Roberts Wesleyan in non-conference action on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Vasco Field. The Cavaliers (0-3) jumped out to an early lead, but couldn't hold on as the Redhawks (4-2) responded for the win.
Frank Savena and Benjamin Suchomma on the assist from Marcus Brown were responsible for giving the Maroon and Gold a quick 2-0 lead in the first 4:14 of the game. After Roberts responded with a pair of goals of its own, Walsh took the lead once again as Suchomma scored his second of the day on an assist from Savena with 7:24 left in the quarter.
Suchomma was just getting started. After the visitors scored the next three, Suchomma once again tied the game with the next two goals in the middle of the second. The score stayed equal at 5-5 until the Redhawks found the back of the net just five seconds before the half on a man-up score.
Suchomma added two more in the third quarter to give him six for the day and Brydan Heisler also scored to keep the Cavs within striking distance, but Roberts' defense kept Walsh scoreless in the fourth while adding five goals of its own for the difference.
Defensively Shane Profio caused three turnovers and picked up a couple of ground balls to lead the Cavs. Devon Holmes flipped those numbers with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Ryan Rafac added a pair of each. Specialist Jake Cieszysnki added six ground balls after going 11-of-24 on face-offs.
The Cavs now head on the road for their next three games, two of which come out-of-state this week. The first will be at Mount Olive on Tuesday. Face-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
