(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Former conference rivals highlight the opening weekend of play for the men's soccer team as Walsh welcomes Daemen and Roberts Wesleyan tomorrow and Saturday, respectively. All three were former members of the American Mideast Conference during their NAIA era before making the move to the NCAA six years ago.
The Cavaliers and Wildcats resumed the series last year in Amherst, N.Y., as Daemen took a 2-1 victory. Before that, the last time Walsh played either team regularly was in 2011 when the Maroon and Gold went undefeated in AMC play with a pair of wins against both teams. Walsh defeated Daemen by scores of 4-1 and 4-2. The Redhawks, then known as the Raiders, also went down by scores of 2-1 and 4-1.
A young Walsh returns a majority of letter winners from last year's G-MAC tournament qualifying team. Dwight Van Dyke (16 points, seven goals, two assists) and Myles Cornwall (15 points, six goals, three assists) look to lead the offense.
On the defensive side, virtually the entire back line returns with added players providing more depth for the Cavaliers.
Kickoff tomorrow against Daemen is set for 7:30 p.m. The Cavs and Redhawks will do battle Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
