(CEDARVILLE, Ohio) – It was a successful regional championship meet for the No. 19 Walsh men's cross country team as it finished fourth in a loaded field of 28 teams Saturday. The Cavaliers had a score of 117 with only Grand Valley State (58), Southern Indiana (72), and Lewis (107) defeating them.
Leading the way for the Cavaliers was Jacob Kernell who earned All-Region honors with a third place finish. He crossed with a time of 31:26 with an average km of 3:08.6. Only Tiffin's Ngandu and Bellarmine's Chris Striegel had better times at 30:11.8 and 31:24.8.
The next four Cavaliers all finished in the top 50. Steven Kapes was next for Walsh and also received All-Region honors with a 14th place finish as he clocked in at 31:49.
Justin Maroni finished 28th with a time of 32:26.2 and received 27 points for Walsh. Noah Murray was next for the Maroon and Gold in 34th place at 32:31.5. Spencer Wirick completed the team scoring in 42nd place with 32:48.1
The top three teams automatically qualify for the national championships, which means Walsh will have to wait until Monday evening to see if it receives one of eight at-large bids. Kernell will qualify regardless of fate of the team with his top five performance individually.
The national championships will be ran at Southern Indiana's Angel Mounds course on November 18.
