Softball Splits Final Day of Spring Break

(CLERMONT, Fla.) – The final day of spring break competition for the Walsh softball team was split between a pair of 7-1 games. The Cavaliers (7-12) dropped the first against Illinois-Springfield (9-10), but rebounded well to leave the Sunshine State on a winning note against Kutztown (8-4).

In the opener, the Cavs scored their only run in the top of the sixth when Kendra Moore doubled to left field to score Abbey Yaugher. Yaugher started the frame with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a passed ball. Moore went 2-for-3 in the game.

In the nightcap, a balanced offense spread throughout the game helped lead Walsh to victory. Kirsten Reed opened the scoring with a two-RBI single to right that brought home Yaugher and Jenna Head. Yaugher made the score 3-0 in the third when her sacrifice fly scored Head for the second time.

The Maroon and Gold pushed the lead to 5-0 in the fifth when Yasmine Rivera took advantage of an error on Kutztown's catcher.

The Bears answered with its only run of the game in the bottom of the frame, but Walsh added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Yaugher singled in Olivia Pifer and Nikki Newman brought in Moore.

Ryan Kuula went the distance in the win with two strikeouts. The one run allowed was unearned on four hits.

Head was 3-for-4 in the second game with three runs scored. Yaugher and Reed both had two-hit games with two RBI each.

The Cavaliers will fly home Sunday and prepare for conference action next weekend with trips to Saginaw Valley on Saturday and Northwood on Sunday.
