(ATHENS, Ohio) – It was a great start to the season for Walsh as it defeated Ohio in exhibition play 82-66 on Saturday afternoon. It's the second third win for the Cavaliers over a Division I opponent in preseason action since joining the NCAA. Walsh has also defeated fellow MAC school Kent State and Butler over the last few years.
The Maroon and Gold used a dominating second half in which it outscored the Bobcats 49-29 over the last two quarters. Walsh stuck with Ohio for the first half and trailed by four at the half.
The third quarter was the turning point for the Cavs. The Bobcats opened up with a layup to start the period, but then Walsh went to work. A pair of free throws by Alex Hochstedler, a 3-pointer by Dominique Foley, and another free throw by Mayci Sales tied the game at 39-39. After Ohio scored the next two baskets, Walsh took the lead for good after it scored the next seven points.
A 16-1 run that stretched from the end of the third quarter to the start of the fourth put Walsh firmly in control. A Shelby Henkel layup was icing on the cake as it gave the Cavs their largest lead of the night at 78-57 with 3:34 left in the game.
Hochstedler ended the day with a game-high 20 points and dished out five assists. Foley was right behind her with 19 points and was 6-of-11 from the field with three triples. Holly Grober led the team with nine rebounds.
Overall, Walsh was 26-of-56 from the field and 10-of-20 from behind the arc. The Cavs also controlled the glass with a 42-39 rebound margin.
Walsh will now prep for its season opener against Quincy on the neutral grounds at Trevecca. Tip-off is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m.
