Scarton Sets Career-High in Cavs Victory, 87-73

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Walsh Cavaliers women's basketball team used a fourth quarter run to pull themselves to an 87-73 victory over the Tiffin Dragons on Thursday (Jan. 3) at Alumni Arena.

A 15-3 run in the opening of the fourth quarter pushed a one-point game to a 13-point lead with less than six minutes to go.

The Cavaliers converted five of their first six shots as Lexie Scarton scored seven points for a Walsh 11-5 lead with 7:12 left in the opening frame. The Dragons cut the lead to four before Quionche Carter converted a three-point play. The Cavs led 16-9 moments before the halfway point of the quarter. Shelby Henkel added four points and Brittni Clopton made a three pointer in the final three minutes as Walsh led 23-17 after one.

Both teams used runs throughout the second quarter. Five different players combined for a 12-6 run over the four minutes of the second quarter, giving the Cavaliers a 35-23 advantage. Jill Blacksten and Tyler Newkirk both made three point plays during the run. Over the next minute, Tiffin responded with an 8-0 run of their own to pull within four. Carter converted a three-point play and Blacksten made a three pointer for Walsh on a 7-2 rally, pushing the lead to nine with 3:16 to go before the half. Tiffin scored eight straight points in the final three minutes, making it 42-41 Walsh at the intermission.

Tiffin took the lead on the first basket of the third quarter but Walsh regained control with an 11-4 run. Henkel scored three straight points that tied the game before Blacksten, Jamie Halloran and Scarton all scored baskets. The Cavaliers forced a Tiffin timeout with 4:46 left in the quarter, leading 53-47. The Dragons cut the lead to three twice but Clopton added a three pointer late in the third. Walsh led 59-53 after three quarters.

The Dragons fired out of the quarter timeout with five straight points, trailing 59-58. The Cavaliers gained full control with the 15-3 run over a three-minute span. Scarton made two key three pointers while Carter, Clopton and Halloran all added points as Walsh led 74-61 with six minutes remaining. Tiffin trimmed the lead to seven before Walsh converted nine free throws in the last four minutes to seal the G-MAC victory.

Scarton led the Cavaliers with a career-high 21 points on six field goals (three treys) and six free throws. Carter followed with 15 points and five rebounds. Clopton scored 12 points and tied a season-high with six rebounds and two blocks. Blacksten added ten points and two blocks.

Aarion Nichols led the Dragons with 14 points.

The Cavaliers will host Cedarville on Saturday (Jan. 5) at 1:00 PM at Alumni Arena.
