NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Walsh Cavaliers women's basketball used a big third quarter to get back to their winning ways on Thursday (Jan. 24) evening at Alumni Arena.
The Cavaliers outscored the Alderson Broaddus Battlers 24-9 in the third quarter, leading to an 88-66 victory. Walsh has scored 384 points in the third quarter this season, the highest total of the games.
Both teams scored twice early, tying the game at four. Walsh went on an 8-0 run over the next two and a half minutes. Brittni Clopton scored four points on the run as Jill Blacksten and Kimmie Borck each added two points. The Cavaliers led 12-4 with 4:57 to go in the first quarter. Alderson Broaddus closed the gap to two twice but the Cavaliers held the lead. Clopton stole the ball and beat the buzzer with a layup as the Cavaliers led 22-18 after one quarter.
The Battlers opened the second quarter with a basket but then the Cavaliers scored six straight points on layups from three different players. Walsh gained a 28-20 advantage with 7:32 left in the first half. Alderson Broaddus trimmed the lead to four with 3:55 to go. Walsh went on a 10-4 run with four points from Mayci Sales and then three pointers by Hannah Blake and Borck. Alderson Broaddus scored to end the half, as Walsh led 45-37 at the intermission.
Borck, Sales and Blacksten all had layups as Walsh came out of the locker room on a 6-0 rally. Alderson Broaddus made a three-pointer before Walsh used a 18-6 run spanning the last six minutes of the quarter. Sales had the final six points of the quarter with six other players had points on the run. The Cavaliers led 69-46, the largest lead of the night after three quarters.
Payton Pooler answered AB's first fourth quarter basket with a three of her own. The Battlers scored eight straight points before Sales and Blacksten scored layups, pushing the lead back to 76-56. After four straight Battlers points, Shelby Henkel, Borck and Pooler combined on a 6-0 Cavaliers run as Walsh led 82-60. Megan Ball scored the last four points as the Cavaliers clinched an 88-66 victory.
Sales led the Cavaliers with 20 points on ten-of-13 shooting. She also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked four shots. Her 20 points tied a career-high. Blake was one of two bench players with double-digit points. She scored 13 points with three treys. Borck added 11 points with three assists and two steals. Clopton gave the Cavaliers ten points and seven rebounds off the bench. Henkel gave the team a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Cavaliers shot a season-best 54.7% (35-64) from the floor.
Alderson Broaddus was led by Yolanda Florido, who scored 16 points.
Walsh will conclude the two-game homestand with a 1:00 PM tip against Davis & Elkins at Alumni Arena.
