Cavaliers Earn Number One Seed and Share of Regular Season Crown

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Walsh Cavaliers women's basketball team had a number of special moments on Saturday (March 2) as they defeated the Ursuline College Arrows 81-68. The Cavaliers earned the number one seed for the upcoming G-MAC Tournament, became regular season co-champions and senior Brittni Clopton capped her Senior Day with her 1,000th career point.

Walsh and Ursuline battled back and forth in the first seven minutes as the game was tied three times in the early going. Megan Ball made a three pointer and Mayci Sales added a layup as Walsh ended the first quarter on a 5-1 run. The Cavaliers led 17-13 after one quarter.

Walsh pushed the lead to 12, leading to an Ursuline timeout when the Cavs went on a 10-2 run over the first five minutes of the second quarter. Jamie Halloran scored five points on the run. Ursuline closed the gap to four with a 9-1 rally over the next two minutes. The teams exchanged baskets as Walsh led 40-31 at the halftime break.

Over the first four minutes of the third quarter, Walsh extended the lead to 19 as the Cavaliers scored 12 of the 14 points in the game. Shelby Henkel scored six points and Sales added four points on the rally. The Arrows crawled to within 15 before the Cavaliers led by 20 twice. Clopton's shining moment came with 3.3 seconds left in the third quarter as she knocked down the first free throw to become the 22nd member of the 1,000-point club. Walsh led 63-44 after three quarters.

Ursuline gave the Cavaliers a run in the fourth quarter with a 14-4 run as they pulled within nine with six minutes to go. Quionche Carter scored nine consecutive points of a Walsh 14-1 as they pushed the lead to 23 with four minutes left. The Arrows ended the game with an 8-0 run but Walsh won their ninth straight game to become co-champs, 81-68.

This was the Cavaliers' first regular season championship since the 2011-12 season.

Sales scored 17 of her career-high 25 points in the first half as she led all scorers. Carter had a 15-point second half to finish with her scoring total, including her nine point run. She tied Clopton for the team lead in rebounds with seven. Clopton scored nine points on her Senior Day, bringing her career total to 1,003. Tyler Newkirk and Henkel each had eight points while Newkirk dished out seven assists.

The Cavaliers will host Trevecca Nazarene on Tuesday (March 5) for the Great Midwest quarterfinal at 5:30 PM.
