(BAY CITY, Mich.) - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following the first weekend of the 2017 outdoor track and field season. In women's competition, Walsh junior Sarah Berger earned GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors, while Walsh junior Kaitlyn Barber captured GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week accolades.
WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Sarah Berger, Walsh
With a second place finish in the 1,500 meter run at the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State, four-time All-American Sarah Berger finished second with a time of 4:19.79 to set a new school record by four seconds and clear the automatic mark for the national championships. In a field of 108 runners from mostly Division I schools, Berger finished behind only Dartmouth's Helen Schlachtehna who finished the race in 4:18.25. She currently holds the best time in not only the GLIAC, but in all of Division II as well. On the second day of the Raleigh Relays, Berger finished second in the 4x800 meter relay with a team that finished the race in 8:57 and shattered the school record in the event by over 30 seconds.
WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Kaitlyn Barber, Walsh
Walsh All-American junior Kaitlyn Barber, fresh off the indoor national championships, finished first in the pole vault with a height of 3.95 meters to clear the provisional mark. Her height is currently first in the GLIAC and tied for third nationally. She also raced in the 400 meter dash at Muskingum this weekend and finished second with a time of 1:00.21
Berger, Barber, and the Cavaliers will return to action Friday and Saturday at the Wooster Invitational.
