KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Walsh University baseball team continued their Florida trip with a 2-0 loss to Minnesota-Crockston on Monday (March 4) and a 6-4 win over USciences on Tuesday (March 5). Yesterday's win puts the Cavaliers at 2-6 so far on the season.
Vs. Minnesota-Crookston (March 4)
Monday's game was a pitcher's duel, as Minnesota-Crookston scored their only two runs in the third inning and the Cavs were held scoreless. For the Golden Eagles, the only runs of the game were scored when Brook Reller singled to center field to drive home Reed Hjelle and Landyn Swenson. Joey Holiga and Bailey Mosley connected for the lone Cavalier hits on the day as they singled in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively.
The loss went to Nik Barkdull, as he allowed two runs on five hits throughout four innings. Barkdull had seven strikeouts, while allowing five walks. Dylan Corsi came in to pitch the next four innings, shutting out the Golden Eagles, including striking out three batters and only giving up two hits. Frank Frate closed the game, shutting out Minesota-Crookston in the ninth inning.
Vs. USciences (March 5)
Tuesday's game was a battle of the hitters, as the Cavaliers connected for 16 hits and USciences connected for eight hits on the day. Junior first baseman Andrew Czech went five-for-five from the plate, starting with a double in the first inning. Avery Janning had an RBI single as Czech scored. In the bottom of the second, Bailey Mosley singled and Eric Conner doubled. Czech then hit a two-run RBI, scoring Conner and Mosley. In the fifth inning, Cobe Hutchinson connected for an RBI single, scoring Brenden Spaulding. The Cavs entered the seventh inning tied 4-4 when Joey Holiga hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Mosley. In the bottom of the eighth, Alec DeBruler singled to center field, Czech scored the final run of the contest.
Brent Alazaus pitched the first five innings of the game for the Cavaliers, giving up five hits and striking out seven batters. Drew Saunier recorded his first win of the season from the mound. Saunier pitched three innings, giving up two hits and striking out two batters. Ben Bulchik earned the save in the last inning. Bulchik gave up one run, but struck out two batters.
Walsh faces the University of Mary this morning (March 6) at 10:30 AM.
