NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Walsh Cavaliers baseball team closed out the 2019 regular season with a four-game series against the Tiffin Dragons this weekend at Biery Stadium. Tiffin took three of the four games.
Walsh finished the regular season with a 27-22 overall record and 19-13 in the G-MAC.
Tiffin scored nine runs in the first five innings before the Cavaliers made a charge at the Dragons. Eric Conner and Brenden Spaulding each hit a two-run homerun in the sixth inning as Walsh trailed 9-4. Tiffin scored once in the seventh inning with the Cavaliers responding in the eighth inning as a run scored on an interference call. The Dragons drove in two runs in the top of the ninth, leading 12-5 going into the final half inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Andrew Czech became the single season home run leader with his 17th homer of the season, a three-run shot over the right-center field scoreboard. Walsh fell 12-8 in the series opener.
Czech had three hits, including two doubles and his homerun. Avery Janning had a pair of hits along with Spaulding, who hit a double and a home run. Five other players had a hit.
In a back-and-forth battle, the Cavaliers evened the series with an extra-inning contest on Friday (May 3). Tiffin scored first in the first inning but the Cavaliers fought back in the second inning. Jarret Lyon lined a two-run double to right-center field, giving the Cavs a 2-1 lead. The Dragons tied the game in the fourth and took the 3-2 lead in the sixth inning. Janning tied the game with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh with the winning run being thrown out at the plate. In the ninth, Tiffin added a run in the ninth before Walsh evened the score at four in the bottom half. Bailey Mosley knotted the score with an RBI single, forcing another extra inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Jacob Beachy lined the game-winner over the second baseman's head for a Walsh 5-4 win.
Mosley and Holiga notched three-hit games with two singles and a double. Lyon had two hits, including his two-run double.
Tiffin started the game with a run in the top of the first. Spaulding tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning. The Dragons added six runs in the final six innings for a 7-1 win.
Five different players had a hit in the game. Spaulding tied the single season doubles record with his 20th double of the season.
The Dragons put up five runs in the first two innings, but the Cavaliers used a three-run fourth to cut the lead to two. Cam Kaiser and Beachy had RBI singles while Holiga added an RBI groundout. Tiffin regained a four-run lead with a run in the fifth and seventh innings. Kaiser doubled home a run in the eighth but Tiffin added three insurance runs in the ninth for a 10-4 win.
Beachy had three singles and Kaiser had a single and a double for a two-hit game. Cobe Hutchison added two hits of his own.
The Cavaliers will open the 2019 Great Midwest Baseball Tournament at Prasco Park on Wednesday (May 8) against an opponent to be determined.
