Walsh Falls in Season Opener in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Going up against the FCS Dukes of Duquesne University on Saturday (Sept. 7) afternoon, the Walsh Cavaliers fell in the season opener at Arthur J. Rooney Field in Pittsburgh. 

The Cavaliers fell 44-3 to the Dukes in the opening contest of the 2019 season. 

Walsh's defense held the Dukes to one touchdown in the first quarter on three different drives. Duquesne scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter as Walsh trailed 20-0 at the half. The Dukes added two touchdowns in the third quarter before Walsh scored with two minutes to go in the quarter. Chad Mirolo converted a 27-yard field goal for the Cavaliers as they were behind 34-3 going to the fourth quarter. The scoring concluded with ten Duquesne points in the final quarter as the final score was 44-3. 

Nick Gassman completed six passes while Tadas Tatarunas had four completions in the second half. Koby Adu-Poku caught four passes and ran the ball 19 times for a total of 54 yards. 

On defense, Phillip Keller and Leondre Crosby led the Cavaliers with seven tackles each. 

The Cavaliers will host the #23 Ashland University Eagles on Saturday (Sept. 14) at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. Kickoff for the home opener is set for 1:00 PM.
