Newell is in his third year with the program this season. He has over 50 years of coaching and teaching experience at the collegiate and high school levels. 

Newell came to Walsh after spending four seasons with Baldwin Wallace under Head Coach John Snell. There he helped the Yellow Jackets to a second place finish in the OAC in 2015 and a pair of third place finishes the previous two seasons.

He also is a former assistant under longtime Walsh head coach Jim Dennison while at the University of Akron from 1975 to 1985, where he helped develop two three-time All-American linebackers. During that time the Zips recorded a record of 70-49-2, were the NCAA Division II runner-up in 1976, and qualified for the 1985 Division I-AA playoffs.

Newell was additionally a 12-year assistant at Apopka High School and a 12-year Offensive and Defensive Coordinator at Winter Park High School. While at Apopka, the team won the Florida State Championship in both 2001 and 2012. 

Newell is an Akron University graduate where he was a member of the football team. He graduated with his B.A. in education in 1969 and his M.A. in education in 1974.
