(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) - Walsh (19-3, 15-3) won its eighth straight game, and remains one-half game ahead of second place of Findlay in the GLIAC South after routing Tiffin University (8-15, 4-14) 91-61 at Alumni Arena today. The win clinches a spot it the GLIAC post-season tournament for the Cavs, which begins on March 5. The Cavs have won posted wins in 14 of their last 15 games. The win sets up Thursday's showdown with the University of Findlay at Alumni Arena at 7:30 pm.
Behind a second straight superb effort from Jeff Copeland (Jr., 6-5, Toledo, OH/St. John's Jesuit), Walsh opened up a 43-35 halftime lead. Copeland was 4-5 from the floor in the first half in scoring 11 points. Walsh shot 57% from the field in the first 20 minutes.
The Cavs scored the first 10 points of the second half to extend the lead to 18 points at 43-35. They would hold the double digit lead the rest of the game, and led by 34 points with 4:28 to play.
Copeland finished with 23 points on 9-11 from the field. In his last two games, he has hit 20-24 shots from floor with back-to-back 20-point games. He also had five rebounds and blocked three shots.
Jesse Hardin (6-1, So., Warren, OH/Harding) added 17 points, connecting on 4-6 from three-point. Chall Montgomery (6-4, So., Cleveland, OH/Central Catholic/U.S. Naval Academy) added 12 points off the bench on 5-7 from the field. Hrvoje Vucic (Sr., 7-1, Split, Croatia/Faust Vrancic/Valparaiso) just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Brad DuPont (Sr., 6-0, Massillon, OH/Jackson/Wheeling Jesuit), who leads the GLIAC in assists, handed out six today.
Walsh shot 58% from the floor on 32-55, and hit 19-24 from the stripe. They out-rebounded the Dragons 41-31.
Tiffin's Joe Grassle led all scorers with 25 points.
