(MARQUETTE, Mich.) - The Walsh men's basketball team cruised to a 95-66 victory over hosting Northern Michigan in the GLIAC opener for both teams at the Berry Events Center. The Cavaliers remain unbeaten on the early season at 4-0 overall. The Wildcats fall to 1-4.
It didn't take long for the Cavaliers to get the offense rolling as their first three baskets came from beyond the arc in what eventually became a theme for the night. Walsh was hot from the land of three as they made 14-of-28 3-point shots with nine coming in the first half. The made 3-pointers accounted for half of the Cavaliers made shots from the field for the game as they were 28-of-53 on the night.
It took only 6:20 to build a double-digit lead after Jesse Hardin (So., 6-1, Warren, OH/Harding) sunk a pair of free throws. He led the team with 20 points and did well around the court with five rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals.
By halftime, Walsh was up 46-31.
Northern Michigan did make an attempt in the second half and brought the deficit to 10 after a pair of free throws made it 51-41 with 15:53 to play. Walsh answered by going on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to keep the momentum in its favor.
The Cavs led by as many as 34.
Chall Montgomery (So., 6-4, Cleveland, OH/Central Catholic/Navy) also had a solid game for the Cavs as he tallied 16 points on 5-of-7 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers. Hrvoje Vucic (Sr., 7-1, Split, Croatia/Faust Vrancic/Valparaiso) scored 14 points to round out the Cavs in double figures.
Walsh returns to action against Michigan Tech on Saturday at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast on 95.9 FM, WNPQ.
