(UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.) - Walsh capped off a hard-fought game in exciting fashion with last-second tip in by Davonte Beard (Jr., 6-2, Akron, OH/SVSM/Siena) to defeat Saginaw Valley State 67-65 in GLIAC action. It's the third-straight victory for the Cavaliers (8-2, 4-2), who also won at Wayne State on Thursday. The Cardinals fall to 5-5 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
The game-winning basket came after the Cavaliers pulled down a rebound off a missed Saginaw Valley shot and called a time out with 21 seconds left. Trey Fletcher (Fr., 6-6, Ironton, OH/HS) eventually found himself with the ball and put up a layup, but the shot was no good with two seconds left. Fortunately for Walsh, Beard was able to get the rebound and tip the ball back in as time expired.
Beard's offensive board was one of 16 in the game for the Cavaliers, who out-rebounded the Cardinals 40-30 in the game.
The game was close from start to finish as neither team held a lead larger than eight points. That lead belonged to Walsh after a free throw by Beard made the score 44-36 with 15:30 left in the game. Along with the preceding layup by Jesse Hardin (So., 6-1, Warren, OH/Harding), it was the only point in the game where the scoring difference was more than two possessions. The first a lead larger than three points occurred came when 4:15 remained in the first half.
The game featured 12 ties and 17 lead changes.
Fletcher led the team with 19 points after he shot 9-of-15 from the field. He also pulled down seven rebounds. Brad DuPont (Sr., 6-0, Massillon, OH/Jackson/Wheeling Jesuit) also scored in double-figures for the Cavs with 12 points.
Walsh will look to build on its three-game win streak at home against Grand Valley State this Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
