(HOUGHTON, Mich.) - Walsh made capped off the perfect weekend with a 93-83 victory over Michigan Tech Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers (5-0, 2-0) remain unbeaten on the year following their first trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Huskies (4-1, 1-1) suffered their first defeat of the season.
Individually, it was a showdown between Jesse Hardin (So., 6-1, So., Warren, OH/Harding) and the Huskies' Austin Armga. Each had 30-point games with Hardin right and 30 and Armga scoring 32.
The game played out about as expected between two talented teams with unbeaten records. Walsh held the lead for the majority of the game, but Michigan Tech kept its deficit to single digits for nearly that entire time. The Cavs took a 38-28 lead after a layup by Jeff Copeland with 5:32 to go in the first half, but the Huskies responded and closed the gap to 44-42 at the half.
Despite the sudden change in momentum, it was the closest Michigan Tech could get. Walsh never trailed in the second half, and even though the hosts threatened, the Cavs staved off all comeback attempts. Walsh's smallest lead came at 58-56 with 12:53 to go in the game.
Tech shot well during the game with a 47-percent clip, but Walsh was even hotter at 62 percent on 33-of-53 from the field. Eight of those were 3-pointers as the Cavs made 40 percent behind the arc.
Hardin could not be stopped as he made 10-of-17 attempts with three 3-pointers. Jeff Copeland (Jr., 6-5, Toledo, OH/St. John's Jesuit) also had a spectacular game with 20 points and seven rebounds. Trey Fletcher (Fr., 6-6, Ironton, OH/HS) scored 14 points and Hrvoje Vucic (Sr., 7-1, Split, Croatia/Faust Vrancic/Valparaiso) scored 12 points to round out double-figure scorers for the visitors.
Walsh returns to action at home against Northwood on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. after the women's game. The game will be broadcast live on WNPQ FM 95.9.
