(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) - Behind Davonte Beard's (6-2, Jr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary/Siena) career-high 19 points, Walsh (16-3, 12-3) led from start-to-finish in an 84-74 win over Ashland University (9-11, 6-10) in a GLIAC South Division game at Alumni Arena. The win was the fifth straight for the Cavs, and their 11th in their last 12 games. Walsh remains one-half game ahead of the University of Findlay in the South Division. The Cavs conclude their four-game home stand on Saturday, when they host Lake Erie College at 3 pm. The game will be broadcast live on WNPQ FM, 95.9, and streamed live on TEAMLINE.
Walsh came out of the gate quickly, jumping to a 16-5 lead in the first four and a half minutes. The Cavs shot 62% from the field, and 58% from three-point in building a 44-30 halftime lead. Jeff Copeland (6-5, Jr., Toledo, OH/St. John's Jesuit) scored 12 points, Jesse Hardin (6-1, So., Warren, OH/Harding) added 10, and Beard tallied nine.
Walsh extended the lead to 20 points early in the second half, and kept the double digit lead until Ashland trimmed the lead to nine points at 76-67 with 2:39 left. The Eagles would close to within seven points twice (76-69, 78-71), but would get no closer.
Beard was 3-3 from three-point and 8-12 from the line. Copeland finished with 16 points and five rebounds. He was 8-8 from the line. Hardin added 12 points, and Brad DuPont (6-0, Sr., Massillon, OH/Jackson/Wheeling Jesuit) and Chall Montgomery (6-4, So., Cleveland, OH/Central Catholic/U.S. Naval Academy) each tallied 11 points. DuPont also handed out a game-high eight assists.
Walsh out-rebounded Ashland 34-22.
The Eagles shot 57% from the floor in the second half, and were paced by Boo Osborne's 19 points off the bench.
