Cavaliers Win Fifth Straight, 85-64

ELKINS, W. Va. - The Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team used a big first half to win their fifth straight game, a 85-64 win over the Davis & Elkins Senators. The win on Thursday (Feb. 7) night put the Cavaliers at a 16-7 record and 11-4 in the G-MAC. 

The Senators were outscored 41-19 in the first half as the Cavaliers won by 21. 

Darryl Straughter and JT Shumate each hit a three as Walsh opened an 8-2 lead in the first three minutes. Davis & Elkins cut the lead in half with a three before Walsh went on a 12-3 run over the next two minutes. Shumate scored six points of the run with Walsh taking a 20-8 advantage with 11 minutes left in the first half. The Senators pulled within eight twice but Walsh had an answer both times. With a 22-14 lead, Sterling Christy and Conner Wess combined for five straight points as the Cavaliers led 27-14. Davis & Elkins immediately hit a three and then Walsh closed the half with an 14-2 run. Straughter had five points, Wess and Reece Bogan each had three points on the run as Walsh led 41-19 at the break. 

Davis & Elkins came out of the locker room on a 10-1 run, slimming the lead to 13 in the first four minutes of the half. Shumate and Bogan allowed Walsh to lead by 18 with five straight points. Four straight Senators points led to Straughter leading an 11-3 rally with nine straight points. Walsh led 58-36 with 11:50 left in the game. Four minutes later, back-to-back baskets by Shumate and Branden Wilkins gave the Cavaliers a 26-point lead. With four minutes remaining, a Caleb Canter dunk put the Cavs up 76-49, a 27-point advantage. Davis & Elkins cut the lead to 19 with an 8-0 run but Wilkins ended the game with six of the final nine points. Walsh won the contest 85-64. 

Straughter scored 20 points on seven-of-15 shooting, including six three pointers. Shumate added 15 points on a seven-of-ten shooting night along with ten rebounds, his second double-double of the season. Wess finished the night with 12 points and five rebounds. Christy was just shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. 

Walsh shot 50% for the fourth straight game, improving to 9-0 shooting better then 50%. 

Trevor English led the Senators with 28 points and 14 rebounds.

The Cavaliers will conclude the weekend with a game at Alderson Broaddus on Saturday (Feb. 9) at 4:00 PM.
