Cavaliers Use Hot Shooting for Seventh Straight W

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team won their seventh straight game on Thursday (Feb. 14) night in a 84-46 win over Trevecca Nazarene.  

The seventh straight win for the Cavaliers improved their overall record to 18-7 overall and 13-4 in the conference.

Trevecca kept up early as they tied the game twice in the first four minutes. Once the game was tied at five, Walsh took over and controlled from there. JT Shumate scored nine of the next 11 points as Walsh answered with an 11-0 run. The Trojans pulled within nine following the under 12 media timeout but Walsh responded with another 10-3 run. The Cavaliers led 30-14 with 7:58 left in the first half. After two Trojan threes, Reece Bogan nailed two straight as Walsh led by 16, 36-20 with five minutes left. Sterling Christy scored four of the final eight points as Walsh closed the half with an 8-0 run, while leading 44-26.

Walsh outscored the Trojans 40-20 in the second half as the Cavaliers pulled away further. The Cavs nailed five three pointers in the first ten minutes of the half, taking a 65-38 advantage. A final 19-6 run closed the game out. Six different players scored on the run, including five from Conner Wess and four from Branden Wilkins.

Shumate led the team with 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting with four threes and seven rebounds. Bogan made five threes for 15 points. Christy added 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Nine different players made it into the scorebook for the game.

The team shot 57.1% overall (32-56) and 51.7% (15-29) from deep. 15 threes made ties a season-best done five times. Walsh dominated the boards with a 38-18 rebound advantage.

The Cavaliers will host Kentucky Wesleyan, to close out the weekend at 3:00 PM.
