NORTH CANTON, Ohio - Walsh sophomore forward JT Shumate has been chosen to represent Walsh University as a part of the USA D2 Men's Basketball Team as they tour Brazil later this month. Ron Smith, Director of USA Sports Tours & Events, announced the rosters and coaches for the men's and women's teams, which are made up of NCAA Division II basketball players from all regions of the United States.
Shumate had a incredible season as a freshman, where he led the Cavaliers with 18.7 points per game and finished second in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in points per game. Along with 6.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game, Shumate shot 52% from the floor, 43.6% from three and 72.5% from the free throw line. He ranked sixth in shooting percentage, third in three point shooting and fourth in blocks within the conference. The freshman from Newark, Ohio was also named G-MAC Freshman of the Year, First Team All-Conference, Second Team All-District by the NABC, and Second Team All-Region by the D2CCA.
The USA D-2 Men's and Women's Basketball Teams Tour will run July 22-31. After team orientation in Orlando, Fla., the team will depart for Sao Paulo, Brazil. They will play their first games on July 24 in the city of Sorocaba and their second set of games on July 25 in the city of Jundiai versus their U22 Club Team. Both cities are in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. On July 26, the teams will fly to Rio de Janeiro. The teams will explore Rio before returning to play on July 27 and July 29 in Rio de Janeiro at the Botafogo Clube and Fluminense Clube. The team departs Brazil on July 31 to return to the U.S.
It will be a total learning experience as they will see all educational, cultural and social aspects of Brazilian life through city, school and sports club visits. They will be conducting a youth clinic while in the city of Jundiai. While in Rio de Janeiro, the team will be staying on the world famous Copacabana Beach and touring the Christ the Redeemer Statue, and Sugar Loaf Mountain, two of the most recognizable landmarks in the world, plus Ipanema Beach, the International Market (Ipanema) and the Lapa Steps all during their time there in Brazil.
