NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh University Men's Basketball team has been selected as the preseason favorites to win the 2019-20 Great Midwest Athletic conference, as the league office announced Tuesday (Oct. 22). The annual G-MAC Men's Basketball Preseason Poll was voted on by the league coaches and ranks all 12 teams in predicted order of finish.
The Cavaliers were voted into the top spot in the poll with 117 points, including seven of the 11 available first-place votes. Last season, the Cavaliers were 24-8 overall, and 16-4 in league play. Walsh won the G-MAC Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
Walsh will be led by reigning G-MAC Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Conference member, JT Shumate, who averaged 18.2 points and 6.2 rebounds. Sterling Christy returns after an impressive year where he averaged a double-double with 13.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per game, all a part of being named Second-Team All-Conference. Darryl Straughter also looks to continue his stellar career, after being tabbed Second-Team All-Conference a year ago, while averaging 15.7 points per game.
Jeff Young, head coach of the Cavaliers, enters his 16th year at the helm with an impressive 356-109 record.
Walsh kicks off the season at the G-MAC/GLVC Challenge at Tiffin. Walsh will open November 9th against Maryville and will face Missouri- St. Louis the following day (Nov. 10). Walsh's home opener will take place November 12th at 12:00 PM, as the Cavaliers will host its first annual Catholic School Day.
