Cavaliers Rally in Final Minute for 87-84 Win

ROCHESTER, New York - The Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team used a late rally to remain undefeated as they erased a five point deficit in the final minute against the Roberts Wesleyan RedHawks on Tuesday (Nov. 26) night on the road. 

Trailing 83-78 with 46 seconds left, the Cavaliers outscored the RedHawks 9-1 for the win. Darryl Straughter gave the Cavaliers a lead with a layup with 19 seconds left. Walsh improved to 6-0 with an 87-84 victory. 

Both teams exchanged the lead seven times in the first two and a half minutes as Sterling Christy put Walsh up 10-8 with a three-point play. Christy and JT Shumate added baskets as Walsh led 14-8 at the first media timeout of the first half. Roberts Wesleyan hit a three pointer out of the media timeout, trimming the lead to three before Mark Mokros fueled a 9-2 Walsh run with a pair of three pointers. Walsh pushed the lead to 23-13 with 13 minutes left before halftime. The RedHawks pulled within four points twice but Christian Montague turned Roberts Wesleyan away with a three pointer. Roberts Wesleyan followed Montague's three ball with an 11-2 run over 4:20 of action. The RedHawks took back the lead, 34-32 with five minutes left in the first half. Shumate tied the game at 34 with a layup before Roberts Wesleyan answered with a three pointer. Straughter tied the game again at 37 with a trey. Shumate followed with Walsh's final six points as they led 43-40 at halftime.

Walsh came out of the gate with a 7-1 run as they expanded the lead to nine within the first two minutes. The RedHawks and Cavaliers battled back-and-forth until Roberts Wesleyan cut the lead to three multiple times. With a slim 60-57 lead, Mokros nailed a three pointer and Christy added an and-one free throw. Walsh's lead ballooned to nine with 10:47 left. Roberts Wesleyan tied the game on a pair of free throws at 72 with 6:23 left, all part of a 15-6 run. Shumate answered with a layup but the RedHawks scored twice for a 76-74 lead with five minutes left. After the under four media timeout, Christy tied the game at 76 with a pair of free throws. The drama wasn't done yet in the Voller Center. 

Roberts Wesleyan took an 82-77 lead with 1:17 left on a 6-1 rally. Christy split a pair of free throws with 1:07 to go, as Walsh trailed by four points. The RedHawks added a free throw with 46 seconds left, forcing Walsh to make up a five point deficit within the final minute. Straughter made one of two free throws with 40 seconds on the clock, leaving the deficit at four. A Roberts Wesleyan free throw was sandwiched by layups from Shumate and Montague. Walsh trailed 84-83 with 21 seconds left. A bad pass turnover allowed Straughter to take back the lead with 19 ticks on the clock. Mokros sealed the win with two free throws in the final seconds.Sh

Shumate tied a season-high with 26 points on 11 field goals along with seven boards. Christy set a season-high with 23 points, making seven shots and nine-of-12 free throws. He grabbed nine rebounds and assisted on five baskets. Montague added 19 points and seven rebounds while Mokros gave the Cavaliers 13 points off the bench. 

Walsh shot 46.3% (31-67) from the floor, outshooting Roberts Wesleyan's 43.8%. The Cavaliers tied the rebounding battle with 37 rebounds but dominated the paint, scoring 44 points. 

The Cavaliers will rest over the Thanksgiving holiday as they will be idle until December 7th when they open G-MAC play with the Lake Erie Storm at 3:00 PM.
