CANTON, Ohio - Many things were on the line in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener between the Walsh Cavaliers and the Malone Pioneers on Wednesday (Sept. 18) afternoon at Jack Hazen Field. Walsh looked to avenge a pair of Malone losses last season and continue the undefeated start into conference play.
The Cavaliers and Pioneers ended without a winner as the game was a 1-1 draw following two overtimes.
Malone started the scoring in the tenth minute with a goal on a cross. The Pioneers held a 1-0 lead until the 26th minute, when the Cavaliers knotted the score at one. After a corner kick, Myles Cornwall served a ball into the box. Gary Canam jumped in the air, knocking the ball off of a body in the box and past the goalkeeper. The game was tied on what could have been an own goal in the box. Walsh outshot the Pioneers 11-4 in the first half but the game was tied after 45 minutes.
The Cavaliers and Pioneers kept the game tied at one goal each through a scoreless second half, with Walsh taking five shots to Malone's four.
For the third time this season, Walsh entered overtime but neither team could score with only three shots combined. The second overtime was a deadlock as both teams earned a point in the conference opener.
Walsh finished the 110 minutes with an 18-11 shot advantage. Ethan Burawa made four saves on five shots on goal for the Cavaliers in the goal.
The Cavaliers will take their 4-0-1 record into the first home game of the G-MAC schedule. Walsh hosts Ohio Dominican on Saturday (Sept. 21) night at 7:30 PM.
