ALLENDALE, Michigan - Members of the Walsh Cavaliers men's tennis team competed at the ITA Midwest Regionals this weekend, held at Grand Valley State University.
Three Cavaliers participated in the A Draw with Jakob Riglewski being the #12 seed. He won his first round match against Max Sanoja of Southwest Baptist 6-3, 6-4 before he was defeated by Martin Manov of Grand Valley State 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the round of 32.
Alex Medina fell to Krishan Taneja (Lake Superior State) 6-3, 6-4 in the first round and was eliminated after a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Carlos Corser of Southwest Baptist.
Clemens Wagner opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Drury's Paul Porcher and then fell to Findlay's Soh Kuyama 6-4, 6-4 in the first consolation round.
Four Cavaliers were slotted in the B Draw at Grand Valley State. Guiherme Carneiro won two of his three matches in the singles draw. In the first round, he made quick work of Lake Superior State's Peter Summers 6-1, 6-0. He upset the sixth seed Michael Summers (Hillsdale) 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 32. His tournament ended with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Nathan Pinto (Mo.-St. Louis).
Filipp Kulynych began the tournament with a 6-2, 6-3 straight sets win over Lake Superior State's Diego Penz. In the round of 32, he was beaten by Michael Staff of Bellarmine 6-4, 6-2.
Dawson Drummond and Pedro Campos were both still alive in the consolation brackets before the remaining consolation matches were abandoned. Drummond fell 6-2, 6-4 to Alex Chan of Ill.-Springfield. He routed Stefan Trisic of Lake Superior State 6-0, 6-0 in what was his final match of the weekend.
Campos started the tournament with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Donovan Nguyen of Wayne State. In the first consolation match, he cruised past Ignacio Carbajosa (Michigan Tech) 6-1, 6-1.
The duo of Riglewski and Medina went 1-1 in the A draw while Kulynych and Wagner dropped the only match in the draw. Riglewski/Medina defeated Ill.-Springfield's team of Menno Servaes and Tomas Martinez 8-4. The seventh seed from Wayne State, Niklas Karcz and Pierre Renaudie were too much for the two as they won 8-2.
Kulynych and Wagner battled the number one seed from Drury, Nico Hadeler and Gregor Kokalj and fell 8-3.
The team of Joao and P. Campos ran into the second seed in the B draw from Grand Valley State, Kushan Shah and Sean Miller, falling 9-7 in a close battled.
Drummond and Carneiro faced off with Maryville's Erik Aarthun and Donovan McKnight in the first round and lost 8-5.
The Cavaliers will play in the UNOH Invitational in Lima, Ohio on Saturday (Oct. 5) and Sunday (Oct. 6).
