NORTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers men's and women's cross country teams kicked off the 2019 season not far from campus as they participated in the Tommy Evans Invitational, hosted by the Akron Zips on Saturday (Sept. 7) morning.
The men's team finished second of seven teams with the women's team taking home third place of ten teams.
Walsh finished behind host Akron with 48 points as all five men finished within the top twenty. Noah Murray was third overall with a time 19:33.7 and Jacob Caniford was exactly nine seconds behind him in fifth place. Freshman Drew Roberts crossed the finish line in seventh, running a 19:47.2 in his first collegiate meet. Beau Boyden came home 14th on a time of 20:22.8 while Ed Walsh rounded out the five scoring positions in 19th with a time of 20:28.0.
The women's team totaled 70 teams as they finished behind Akron and Ohio in third place. Four of the five scoring slots for Walsh finished in the top 13 overall. Alexa Leppelmeier was eighth overall in a 18:20.9, with Claire Robertson behind her in tenth, running a 18:26.4 time. Seniors Alexa Lehotay (18:30.4) and Bre Bakan (18:38.0) were 11th and 13th, respectively. Caitlyn Hadley was 28th, the final scoring position for WAlsh with a 19:20.2.
The Cavaliers will return to action in two weeks at the National Catholic Meet at Notre Dame on September 20th.
