Softball Splits Again

(CLERMONT, Fla.) – The Walsh softball team split another day of competition down in the Sunshine State with a 5-2 win over Minnesota State-Moorhead and a 1-0 loss to LIU Post. The Cavaliers are now 6-9 on the season and 5-5 in their spring break games.

In the opener, the Maroon and Gold scored enough runs to win the game in the opening frame. Kendra Moore started the scoring with an RBI that brought in Kesley Putman before Becca Bode hit a two-run double to score Moore and Danni Murtaugh.

Moorhead scored one in the bottom of the inning to answer, but the Cavs got that run back in the fifth when Murtaugh singled in Putman. Jenna Head added an insurance run with an RBI single to score Nikki Newman in the sixth.

Ryan Kuula started the game and went the first four innings to record the win and improve to 3-3 on the season. Shelbi Gregg came on in relief for the final three frames and picked up her first save of the season.

Putman finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Head and Bode also recorded multiple hit games.

In the nightcap, Walsh was a tough-luck loser as an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth by Post was the lone score of the game.

Olivia Pifer tossed a complete game gem where she struck out 13 batters and allowed just three hits and two walks.

Walsh will return to action tomorrow to take on Lewis and Quincy in the penultimate day of action in Florida.
