(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – The Walsh softball team battled visiting Ohio Dominican and forced a split with the visitors with a 5-3 win in Game 1 and a narrow 2-1 defeat in Game 2. The Cavaliers are now 8-21 on the season and 1-7 in the conference. The Panthers are even both overall at 18-18 and in the GLIAC at 5-5.
The opener was a thriller as the Maroon and Gold rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game up in the bottom of the seventh. Nikki Newman got the Cavaliers on the board with a single to center to score Leah Roten and Rebekah Hoffee. Later in the inning, Kendra Moore scored after Kesley Putman reached on an error by the shortstop.
After a scoreless eighth, Abby Reusser gave the Cavs their first GLIAC win in walk-off fashion as she sent a ball over the left field fence to score Moore for the 5-3 victory.
Olivia Pifer started the game and went the distance to improve to 4-12. She reached double-digits in strikeouts for the third time this season.
In the second game, ODU broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth and held on for the win.
Walsh's lone run was scored in the top of the third when Putman scored on a single by Annie Woolf.
Despite taking the loss, Ryan Kuula pitched an excellent game as she allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts. She is now 4-6 on the season.
The Cavaliers will return to action with another twinbill, this time against Ashland, tomorrow at noon.
