Big Innings Hurt Cavaliers

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Walsh Cavaliers softball team stepped away from Great Midwest play with a doubleheader at home against Northeast Ohio foe Notre Dame College on Thursday (March 28) afternoon.

The Falcons used big innings in both games, sweeping the Cavaliers 6-5 in game one and 6-1 in the nightcap.


Walsh gained an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Emma Bobey lined a two-run double to left field. Taylor Yoder added a RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field. In the second inning, Alina Molette walked and advanced to second in a pitch in the dirt. She was moved to third on a groundout to the pitcher and scored on a wild pitch as the Cavaliers lead 4-0. The Falcons tied the game with a four-run sixth inning. Some small ball led to the Cavaliers regaining the 5-4 lead in the sixth inning. Yasmine Rivera led off with a walk and stole second base. A sacrifice bunt by Katelyn Kennedy put Rivera at third base with one out. Molette singled home Rivera for the Cavs second lead of the day. Notre Dame won the game, 6-5 with two runs in the top of the seventh inning.


The Falcons scored one run in the first inning, four in the second and one in fifth inning for a 6-0 lead through five innings. In the sixth, two singles put runners on the corners for the Cavaliers. Bobey struck again with a sacrifice fly to left field, leading to a run for Walsh. They fell 6-1 in the final game of the doubleheader.

Molette went three-for-three in game two, totaling four hits for the day. Alex Depue and Jessie Rock each had two hits in the second game.

Lauren Frigyes tossed 2.1 innings of one run ball in relief while Sara Gockenbach added three innings of shutout relief work with four strikeouts.

The Cavaliers will host Findlay on Sunday (March 31) at 3:00 PM, weather permitting.
