(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) - The Walsh University softball team played their final doubleheader of the season against rival Malone earlier today (April 27) at the Walsh Softball Complex. The seven seniors were honored prior to the first game: Annie Dehnke, Abbey Yaugher, Rachel Rittelmann, Olivia Edgell, Shelbi Gregg, Ryan Kuula, and Kesley Putman.
The Cavaliers were defeated by the Pioneers in the first game of the day, 3-2 and 6-2 in the second game of the day.
Game one started with three consecutive scoreless innings as both pitchers controlled the pace. The Pioneers would add one on the board in the top of the fourth and one in the top of the 6th to take a 2-0 lead. The Cavs rallied in the bottom of the 6th, as Jessie Rock hit a two run homerun to tie the game. The Pioneers added one more run in the top of the seventh, and the Cavs could not answer in the bottom of the inning.
Emotions ran high as senior Shelbi Gregg took the mound one last time, facing 31 batters in seven innings.
Game two started off with two scoreless innings, before the Pionners went on top 2-0 in the third. The Cavaliers answered with basehits from Rock and Emma Bobey to make the game square at 2. An aggressive offensive 4th and 5th inning put four more runs on the board for the Pioneers. Despite a valiant effort, the Cavaliers would not score another run for the remainder of the game, putting the final score at 6-2.
Alina Mollete led with two doubles and one RBI. Senior Ryan Kuula pitched all seven innings, facing 35 batters in her final appearance.
