INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference announced the Athletes of the Week on Monday (Feb. 18) and for the second time, freshman Quionche Carter was named Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week.
Carter averaged 20 points, 8.5 rebounds and three steals per game last week in two key wins for the Cavaliers. She shot 48.2% (14-29) from the floor and 78.5% (11-14) from the free throw line.
In a 75-55 win over Trevecca Nazarene, Carter scored 19 points on seven field goals and a perfect five-for-five from the free throw line.
Saturday saw Carter lead the way as Walsh clawed closer to a regular season title, defeating Kentucky Wesleyan 84-72. She scored 21 points, including ten in the first quarter, while shooting seven-for-12 overall. From the line, she nailed six of nine free throws. She grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double, her fourth of the year. She also had five steals, a career-high.
The freshman is making her case for G-MAC Freshman of the Year as she is second in the conference with 16.8 points per game. She is 12th in rebounds with 6.1 per game and tied for fifth on the offensive rebound front with 2.5 per game. She shoots 50.5% from the floor, the second best in the G-MAC.
She has been named G-MAC Athlete of the Week once already this season.
Carter and the Cavaliers will face rival Malone in the Mayor's Cup battle this Saturday (Feb. 23) at 1:00 PM. Walsh is 19-6 overall and 15-4 in the G-MAC, and on a six game winning streak. They are currently half a game back of first place with three games left on the schedule.
