NORTH CANTON, Ohio - After cruising to a 96-66 win on Friday (Nov. 8) against Wayne State, it took a fight against the Ferris State Bulldogs on Saturday (Nov. 9) to complete the weekend sweep.
The Cavaliers rallied a few times, including erasing an eight point deficit in the first quarter as they defeated the Bulldogs 89-74 at Alumni Arena.
Ferris State started the game on a 7-0 and jumped to an 11-3 lead three minutes into the game. Walsh tied the game at 16 with a 13-5 run, including five points from both Jamie Halloran and Ty Newkirk. Alyssa Dean scored the final four points for the Cavaliers but trailed 23-20 after the first quarter.
Dean tied the game with a three-point play at the outset of the second quarter. Mayci Sales scored four straight points as Walsh took the first lead of the day, 27-23 with 8:41 left in the second quarter. The game was tied at 27 with four straight Bulldog points. After a 31-31 tie with 5:25 left, Sales scored five of the next seven points as the Cavaliers ended the half on a 7-2 run. Walsh led 38-33 at halftime.
Ferris State opened the quarter with a layup but Walsh took off on a 9-0 run. Kimmie Borck added five points as Sales and Newkirk each scored two points. Walsh led 47-35 at the media timeout. The lead grew to 13 but Ferris State erased it with a 24-7 run over the final five minutes of the third quarter. Walsh trailed 62-58 after three quarters.
After a Bulldog basket to start the fourth quarter, Walsh tied the game at 66 with a Sales three pointer, part of an 8-2 run. Ferris State quickly scored but Quionche Carter nailed a three pointer that gave the Cavaliers a 69-68 lead with 6:59 left. Over the final six minutes, Walsh would not relinquish the lead and closed the game with a 20-6 run. Walsh defeated the Bulldogs 89-74 at home.
Sales led the Cavaliers with 23 points on nine shots (three treys) with eight rebounds. Carter scored 16 of her 17 points in the second half, including 14 in the fourth quarter. Newkirk added 16 points with three assists and five steals. Borck made a trio of three pointers for 13 points. Megan Ball had eight rebounds with five offensive boards.
The Cavaliers shot 47% (32-68) from the floor, including 50% (11-22) from three point land.
Walsh will host the Urbana Blue Knights on Wednesday (Nov. 13) at 5:30 PM.
