SYLVANIA, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers women's lacrosse team opened the 2019 regular season with a 22-goal outburst, setting a program record for goals in a game. the Cavaliers defeated the Lourdes Gray Wolves 22-3 on Thursday (Feb. 21) night.
The win was the first of head coach Matt Shields' career with the Cavaliers. Eleven different players found the back of the net in the game.
Walsh scored 15 goals in the opening half as they led 15-2 at the intermission. Hannah McFeeters and Sarah Dankowski opened the scoring with free position goals in the first ninety seconds of the game. Lourdes cut the lead to one with a goal two minutes in. The Cavaliers scored 13 straight goals as they led by 14 with six minutes left before halftime. Lourdes scored in the final minute of the half. McFeeters added four more goals in the half, Jenny Spragg and Skylar Crandell each beat the goalie twice. Kendra Cowen-Tripp, Becky Parker, Lindsay Hindman, Ellen Lawernce and Emily Atwood all scored a goal in the first half.
The Gray Wolves started the half with a goal before Walsh ended the game with seven straight goals. Leah Cavanaugh scored three goals in the final half, while Dankowski, Cowen-Tripp and Parker each added their second goal of the game. Halle Kotulock scored her first goal of the season in the second half.
McFeeters opened her collegiate career with five goals (three free position goals) with two groundballs and two draw controls. Cavanaugh scored three goals on three shots. Dankowski finished with a total of five points with two goals and three assists along with two draw controls. Crandell had two goals scored and controlled two draws. Spragg scored two goals, caused two turnovers, and controlled three draws. Cowen-Tripp ended the opener with two goals, two groundballs and three draw controls. Parker had two goals of her own. Luisa Landeverde led the defense with three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
The Cavaliers will return to the field on Sunday (Feb. 24) at Edinboro at 5:00 PM.
