(EDINBORO, Pa.) - Another school record fell in Walsh's second indoor meet of the season as Sarah Berger (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) broke the mark in the mile run at the Al Hall Freedom Games. The event was hosted by Edinboro University on Saturday.
It was Berger's first meet of her collegiate career and raced to a time of 5:20.87. That broke the mark of 5:23.08 set by Andrea DeNinno in 2009. Victoria Reeves (Fr., Alliance, Marlington) wasn't too far behind and finished in third behind an unattached runner. Reeves' time was clocked at 5:27.28.
Elsewhere in competition, Meredith Fennell (Fr., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest) also brought in a first place result in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.22.
There were also a handful of second place finishes. The Cavs' 4x400 meter relay team of Kaitlin Barber (Fr., Toledo, OH/Whitmer), Berger, Annie Wise (Jr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo), and Mikayla Dearing (So., Navarre, OH/Perry) had a silver finish with a time of 4:11.48. Barber also finished second in the pole vault with a height of 3.35 meters. Evan Haney (Jr., Copley, OH/HS) added Walsh's other second place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.54 meters.
Third place finishes went to Fennell in the long jump with a distance of 5.05 meters and Kendra Zbinovec in the shot put with a distance of 11.74 meters.
The Cavs will be back in action next week as they travel to Youngstown State. The Penguins' Invitational will be on Friday.
