(HILLSDALE, Mich.) – The women's track & field team finished ninth out of 16 teams at the annual GLIAC Outdoor Championships hosted by Hillsdale College this week. The Cavaliers scored 29 points to tie Northern Michigan for the ninth spot.
Grand Valley State won the championship as it cruised to 159 points. Hillsdale was the runner-up with 109.5 points.
The highlight of the championships came on the final day as Sarah Berger (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) became Walsh's first track and field GLIAC champion as she won the 1,500 meter run. Berger came from behind to edge out Ferris State's Samantha Johnson for the gold with a time of 4:31.28.
Shannon Montgomery (Jr., Newton Falls, OH/HS) picked up five points for the Cavaliers with a fourth place finish in the discus. To make things even better, Montgomery's best throw of 45.43 meters passed the NCAA qualifying mark.
The 4x100 meter relay team finished sixth in the finals with a time of 48.49 today. Meredith Fennell (Fr., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest), Margaret Liberatore (So., Concord, OH/Riverside), Katie Mokros (Fr., Massillon, OH/Central Catholic), and Hannah Luke (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) comprised the team.
Mokros also finished sixth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.24 seconds.
Walsh's season isn't complete as it will head to Pittsburgh to participate in the Gator Invitational. Allegheny College will host the meet on Friday.
