Dougherty Sets New School Record in Javelin at Walsh Invite

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – It was a busy day for the Walsh men's track and field team as it hosted the Walsh Invitational and also had participants at the Bucknell Invitational.

Sarah Berger was one of the few athletes at Bucknell. She turned in an impressive time in the 1,500 meter run as she clocked in at 4:29.05 to finish 10th in a field full of Division I athletes.

At the Walsh Invitational, Cavaliers placed in the majority of the events and took first place in five of them.

In the field, Karley Dougherty set a new school record in the javelin as she cleared 38.07 meters in her second-to-last attempt on Friday at Malone. Danielle Buzzacco was second in the same event with a throw of 33.03 meters.

Kendra Zbinovec easily won the shot put as she bested at 13.44 meters on her fourth attempt.

Shannon Montgomery was second in the discus with a distance of 42.87 meters on her third attempt. Zbinovec was fourth in the same event with a best throw of 40.99 meters.

In the pole vault, current All-American Kaitlyn Barber finished second to former Walsh All-American Stephanie Foster who was competing unattached. Both cleared 3.68 meters for their best height, but Foster did so in her second attempt as opposed to Barber's third to take the win.

Evan Haney and Katherine Schierloh went one-two in the high jump. Haney cleared 1.57 meters to take the win while Schierloh topped at 1.52 meters. Emily Arnold was fourth at 1.42 meters.

Hannah Grace was fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 10.12 meters on her third attempt. Dominique Foley took fifth in the long jump as she cleared 4.97 meters out of the gate on her first attempt.

On the track, Meredith Fennell won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15 second flat while Jetaiya Smith clocked in at 57.83 in the 400 meter dash for first. Lauren Bower was also in the 100 meter hurdles and finished fifth with a time of 16.18.

The 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay squads both finished second. The 4x100 team of Bower, Fennell, Katie Mokros, and Malia Turley ran the event in 48.49. The 4x400 quartet of Barber, Emily Joyce, Margaret Liberatore, and Smith clocked in at 4:05.33.

Mokros wasn't done as she also ran the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.44 and the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.12 to finish fourth in both.

In the 800 meter run, Breanne Bakan finished second with a time of 2:25.86. Maggie Kroll was fourth with a time of 2:27.96 in the same event. Kroll also finished fourth in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:57.9. Bakan was fifth in that event with a time of 5:00.89.

Sarah Torok took second place in the 5K with a time of 19:09.62. Amanda Vincent was fifth with a time of 19:44.44.

Walsh will return to action this Thursday at the Slipper Rock Open. The Cavaliers will also participate in the Jesse Owens Classic at Ohio State later next weekend.
