Cavaliers Sweep Pioneers, 3-0

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers volleyball team hosted the Malone Pioneers in a non-conference matchup at the Cecchini Center on Tuesday (Oct. 29) night. 

The Cavaliers earned their fifth sweep of the season with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-19) victory over the rival Pioneers. 

The first set was a competitive fight as the set was tied ten times with neither team leading by more than three. Hallie Schroeder gave the Cavaliers a 12-9 lead with a kill. The Pioneers trimmed the lead to one before Alexis Gilland pushed the lead back to three at 15-12. Malone tied the set at 15 with Walsh calling a timeout to discuss a plan. Out of the timeout, Malone took the 16-15 lead but Walsh scored three straight points, forcing a Malone timeout. Malone answered with four consecutive points, with another timeout by the Cavaliers. Walsh tied the set at 20 before three more ties. Schroeder forced set point with a kill and an error ended set one in favor of the Cavaliers 25-23. 

Malone opened the second set with eight of the first 12 points, as Walsh took a timeout. Walsh exited the timeout and kicked off an 8-1 run. Amber King and Lauren Loucks each had two kills and Samantha Wentz served a pair of aces with Walsh taking a 12-9 advantage. The Cavaliers led by seven late in the set and took set two 25-19. 

After two ties in the early going of set three, Malone took an 8-7 lead. The lead was short-lived as the set was tied twice more. After an 11-11 tie, two Gilland kills and an ace from Natalie Brutscher gave the Cavaliers a 15-11 lead. Walsh never looked back as they sealed the sweep in front of a loud crowd at home, winning set three 25-19. 

Loucks led all players with 14 kills, including seven kills in set two. Schroeder and Gilland each had nine kills. Olivia Kearns contributed 32 assists and 14 digs on defense, a team-high. Sydnee Marks finished with 11 digs after a six dig second set. Wentz and Brutscher each dug out ten attacks on the back line. 

Walsh will host Alderson Broaddus in the penultimate home game on Friday (Nov. 1) night at 7:00 PM.
