Cavaliers Complete Home Weekend Sweep, Clinch Playoff Spot

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers volleyball team closed out the home schedule with two sweeps in G-MAC play as the Cavaliers improved to 16-6 overall and 8-0 in the conference. 

Walsh bested the Alderson Broaddus Battlers on Friday (Nov. 1) night 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-14) before celebrating Senior Day on Saturday (Nov. 2) with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-18) sweep of the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots. 

Friday (W, 3-0 vs. Alderson Broaddus)

The first set started back-and-forth as the set was tied nine times. With a 14-13 lead, Walsh ended the set with an 11-3 run to win 25-16. Alderson Broaddus led 3-1 in the second set but Walsh took the lead with an 11-2 run and never looked back, winning the set 25-20. It was all Walsh in set three as the Cavaliers opened with a 13-2 run. The match ended with a 25-14 third set score. 

Hallie Schroeder finished with a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs. Alexis Gilland made eight kills on offense. Shannon Heald dug out 12 attacks on the back line. Olivia Kearns assisted on 20 kills and had six digs. Julie Kruse made 13 assists as she split setting duties. Sam Wentz helped the back line with nine digs. Shymara Dykes had four kills and four solo blocks. 

Saturday (W, 3-0 vs. Ohio Valley)

Walsh never trailed in set one despite four ties, as Walsh took set one 25-20. The Cavaliers sped out of the gate in set two with ten of the first 14 points. They pushed the lead to nine twice, taking the second set 25-16. Ohio Valley fought in set three as they led three times. Everytime Walsh trailed, they battled back and tied the set. With seven ties, Walsh gained the lead on a Lauren Loucks kill. They expanded the lead and won 25-18 for the Senior Day sweep.

Schroeder led the Cavaliers with 12 kills with Justine Coffman adding nine kills. Loucks and Amber King had seven kills each on the offensive end. Kearns had a match-high 33 assists. Wentz led the back line with ten digs. 

The Cavaliers have clinched a G-MAC playoff spot and will finish the regular season on the road. It will be a matchup of the top two teams in the conference as Walsh travels to Hillsdale on Friday (Nov. 8) at 7:00 PM.
