SPRINT FOOTBALL DROPS FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON

NORTH CANTON, OH: The Walsh University Cavaliers kicked off their 2024 sprint football season with a tough home opener against Calumet College of St. Joseph on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Larry Staudt Field. Despite a valiant effort, the Cavaliers fell short, losing 27-6 to the Crimson Wave.

The game started slowly, with both teams held scoreless in the first quarter. Calumet broke the deadlock in the second quarter, putting up 13 unanswered points before halftime. Walsh showed signs of life in the third quarter, scoring their only touchdown of the game to narrow the gap to 13-6. However, Calumet pulled away in the fourth quarter, adding 14 more points to secure the victory.

Walsh's offense struggled to find its footing, managing only 17 net rushing yards on 40 attempts. Quarterback Zack Bowman led the passing attack, completing 14 of 26 attempts for 174 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Kai James was Bowman's top target, catching 3 passes for 88 yards and the team's lone touchdown.On the defensive side, Walsh put up a fight but couldn't contain Calumet's balanced offense. The visitors accumulated 96 rushing yards and 162 passing yards, with quarterback Nino Barbosa throwing for 162 yards and a touchdown.

The Cavaliers will look to bounce back in their next game against Bellarmine University on September 22 at 1:00 PM, held at Larry Staudt Field in North Canton, OH.
