BIG RAPIDS AND DAVENPORT, MI: Both Walsh Tennis teams opened last weekends matches with tough losses against Ferris State University. Despite the losses, several players produced spirited performances, coming up just short in close three-set matches. Seniors Lukas Kohler and Ethan Milgan had standout performances, powering to a commanding 6/4 doubles victory. Joan Dasi battled but eventually fell in three sets 3/6, 6/2, 6/3.
On the women's side, Walsh dropped the doubles point after losses at #2 and #3. However, Taira Abildayeva and Olesya Ivaschuck at #1 were firing on all cylinders, cruising to an emphatic doubles win — their first doubles victory of the season. Later that day, Olesya Ivaschuck fell in her fourth three-set match of the season, 6/7(2), 7/5, 8/10.
Both teams lost, 7-0.
Last Sunday, the Cavaliers returned with their best energy and attitude on the court so far this spring. Walsh Men's and Women's teams defeated Davenport University 5/2 and 4/3, respectively. Ross Trias earned Cleveland Clinic Athlete of the Week following confident wins in both doubles and singles at #1. The men secured points from #1 through #5 positions to seal the victory.
The Women's match was decided by a first-career clinch from Liv-Grete Laarmann at #5: 6/4, 1/6, 7/6(5). It was an outstanding performance from Liv, who competed sparingly last year but proved that hard work pays off and that she is ready to make a major impact this season. She was named G-MAC Athlete of the Week. Lina Starke was unstoppable at #2, fully utilizing her aggressive game and powerful forehand to claim a three-set victory, 3/6, 6/2, 6/2.
Next weekend, Walsh Tennis travels to face Purdue University Northwest.
