Walsh defeated NAIA No. 12 Houghton 3-2 in a dramatic match for the Cavaliers first-ever win over the Highlanders Tuesday evening at Milazzo Field. The Cavs (8-2, 4-1) were led by Lauren Jokovich (So., 5-4, Canton, OH/Jackson) who scored a pair of goals from outside the box on free kicks. Houghton falls to 10-2 with the loss.
Jokovich's first goal came in the 15th minute on a free kick about 30 yards away and sent it to the far post in the top right corner just past the outstretched arms of the goalie. It appeared as though Walsh would head into the break up 1-0 before Alyssa Figueroa tied it up in the 43rd minute. The Cavs took the lead once again in the 61st minute on a goal by Lauren Frank (Fr., 5-2, Copley, OH/HS) on an assist from Molly Martin (Jr., 5-7, Canfield, OH/HS) following a rebounded shot on goal by Martin from a corner kick.
Jokovich then scored what proved to be the game winning goal on another free kick, this time from 25 yards out, with fewer than five minutes remaining. The Highlanders scored another goal a couple of minutes later to set up the final score 3-2, but could not tie it up in the final minutes as the Walsh defense held strong. Jillian Zanney (Sr., 5-11, Brunswick, OH/HS) recorded the win with two saves between the pipes.
The Cavs return to action as they host Carlow Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
