Walsh opened the new season with a 3-0 win over visiting Lake Erie College (0-1) under the lights at Milazzo Field, giving first year head coach Dave Renard a victory in his head coaching debut.
With both teams battling temperatures close to 90 at game time, it was Walsh that struck first. With 11:35 to play in the first half, Gina Pinzone (5-6, Jr., Cleveland, OH/Padua Franciscan) scored from four yards out on a pass from Emma Engler (4-11, Jr., Canfield, OH/Cardinal Mooney), as the Cavs drew first blood. The Pinzone tally was the only score of the first half.
Lauren Frank (5-2, Fr., Copley, OH/HS) added the first of two insurance goals, on an assist from Carley Adams (5-8, Jr., Louisville, OH/HS) from point blank range with 22:51 to play. Rachel Rucker (5-5, So., Uniontown, OH/Lake) then tacked on the final goal, on a break-away, with 2:22 to play on a beautiful pass from Kelly Sklenar (5-3, Jr., Canfield, OH/Cardinal Mooney).
Walsh's Jillian Zanney (54-11, Sr., Brunswick, OH/HS) turned back 10 saves in recording the shutout.
Walsh is home to Urbana University on Sunday at 1 pm.
