Box Score 2 (BELMONT, N.C.) - Walsh (2-3) lost twice at the Belmont Abbey Tournament today. UNC Pembroke edged the Cavs 3-2 and Belmont Abbey whitewashed Walsh 3-0. The Cavs are back in action at 9 am tomorrow against Arkansas Tech, and then meet Chaflin at 1 pm.
For the second straight match Walsh (2-2) lost the first two sets, but this time their rally fell short, as they lost to UNC Pembroke (2-3) in five sets in their first match at the Belmont Abbey Tournament. On Tuesday night the Cavs dropped their first two sets at Alderson-Broaddus University, but came back to win the match in five sets. After falling 16-25 and 22-25 in the first two sets, it looked as if Walsh would go quietly in the third set as they trailed 12-5. Walsh then caught fire, outscoring UNC 20-2 to win the set 25-14. The Cavs tied the set at 14-14, and then ran off the nine straight points. Walsh never trailed in the fourth set, winning 25-18 to even the match. The fifth and deciding set belonged to UNC Pembroke. Walsh's only lead was at 1-0 and the sets last tie was at 6-6, as UNC came away with a 15-9 win, and the match. Paige Chandler (6-0, Sr., Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) and Krissy Sokol (5-9, Sr., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) paced the Cavs with 13 kills each. Chandler added 16 digs and Sokol 12. Haley Howell (5-11, Fr., Clarkston, MI/Our Lady of the Lakes) handed out 41 assists, and Kelsey Snider (5-10, So., Olmsted Falls, OH/HS) added 9 kills and Kaitlyn Bronikowski (5-6, Fr., Toledo, OH/Central Catholic) 11 digs.
Belmont Abbey (4-2) defeated Walsh by set scores of 20-25, 25-27 and 21-25. Chandler led Walsh with 21 kills to go with 7 digs. Snider added 12 kills. Sokol had 15 digs and Bronikowski added 10. Howell recorded 42 assists.
